Based in Shoreditch, East London and with a special love and interest in the culture and history of the area, the company was named after the town of its birth. Shoreditch, once the home of Shakespearian theatre, is the ideal area to bring his and other classical plays alive and accessible to a popular modern audience, both in Shoreditch and in venues beyond East London.
Lights of London Productions is the home of the Shakespeare in Shoreditch Ensemble, and was so named after the first successful production about Will Shakespeare's early days in Shoreditch premiered at the Hackney Empire in 2008 and at the Old Blue Last, Shoreditch.
This was followed in spring 2009 with 'Measure for Measure' which was also an opportunity to establish a link with Shakespeare's other theatrical home on the Southbank at The Rose Theatre, Bankside, a site owned by the Globe which is in restoration.
'Shakespeare's Women' was written and produced in winter 2009 - a successful piece of new writing incorporating the Bard's characters and works and playing again at The Old blue, The Rose and Baron's Court Theatre.
In Autumn 2010 Lights of London, with invited actors, embraced the challenge of a lost classic in the form of Ben Jonson's 'The Magnetic Lady' at The White Bear Theatre Club, Kennington for first ever UK professional revival of this virtually unknown work by Shakespeare's contemporary.
